2-Day ICC Prep & Assessment
The certificate you need if you want to charter a boat overseas.
An ICC or International Certificate of Competence is proof of your ability to skipper a boat when chartering in European countries.
Canadians and Americans may obtain the ICC through an RYA Training Centre like Topmast. This takes the form of an on-the-water assessment. Successful candidates will receive a certificate from the RYA by mail after registering online via the RYA website.
What happens in the Assessment?
An RYA instructor will spend the day assessing your sailing skills and theoretical abilities (including collision regs) on and off the water. At the end of the day the instructor will either recommend or not recommend you for ICC eligibility.
What do I have to know to pass?
You should already have the practical and theoretical skills up to or higher than the level of RYA Day Skipper, unless you already have a Day skipper in which case the RYA will send you the ICC. Try our quiz below to get an idea of what to know.
What is the “prep” part of the Assessment?
Not everyone passes, so Topmast added a prep day to give candidates an opportunity to improve their chances of passing the assessment. It means getting used to the boat and going over the main aspects of the assessment.
What do I have to bring with me?
You will need a pen/pencil, notebook, photo ID, suitable clothing for sailing on the day (a foul weather jacket just in case), water bottle, hat, sunscreen and shoes with non-marking soles. We provide life-jackets but you may bring your own.
