First RYA Powerboat Certificates in Canada

Fintan Hartnett is the Principal and Chief Instructor at Topmast Maritime Training and an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor as well as Sail Canada and ASA instructor.

A wet May has made for some interesting challenges in the sail training business. However, when Topmast ran Canada’s first Powerboat Level 1&2 course over the May 27/28 weekend there was nothing but sunshine.

With every intention of carrying out the short theory component in the Collin’s Bay Yacht Club the sunshine instead kept us outside and we sat at one of the marina’s big picnic tables under the shade of a big tree – very chilled and our students Gary and Stefan appreciated the relaxed setting.

After lunch and a safety briefing we saddled up on Wally, our Zodiac 550 Pro training boat, for some close quarter maneuvering before getting up on the plane for a brief speed session (Stefan’s favourite).

At the end of the day we headed to downtown Kingston and the Kingston Brewing Company where we sat on the busy patio and enjoyed a cool refreshment and the best fish and chips this side of the Maritimes.

Sunday was filled with boat work out on the water and a couple of assessments like MOB’s and easy navigational exercises. Much to Stefan’s delight we got to go fast again and again and again… All in all a great success. Congratulations to Gary and Stefan, it was tons of fun.
